[songfic] Siúil a Rúin 1/1
Feb. 5th, 2004 04:36 pmAuthor: Sheena (Thunderfoot)
Rating: PG
Beta: Bronze Tigress
Warnings: Spoilers for Wufei’s Ep Zero. Mentions Shounen-ai.
Parings: 5xM, 5+? (5x?)
Disclaimer: The characters don’t belong to me, they belong to whomever owns Gundam Wing.
Notes: Siúil a Rúin is a traditional Irish folk song. If you’ve seen Lord of the Dance then you’ve heard a version of it but that isn’t the one that I used here. The one that I used here is a beautiful, and extremely mournful, version sung by the NZ band Lothlorien. I’ll stick an mp3 of it up in the files section so you can have a listen to what it sounds like if you want me to.
Notation: This Fic has been rated in accordance with the approved TTFF Rating System for Australian and New Zealand fiction.
Don’t ask me where the hell this came from, wouldn’t have a clue, it just popped into my head.
If you want it just ask ^_^ I don't bite.
Translation of chorus:
Go, go, go love
Go calmly and silently
Go to the door and escape with me
And may you go safely my darling.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
I would I were on yonder hill
'Tis there I’d sit and cry my fill
And every tear would turn a mill
Is go dté tú mo mhuirnín slán
---------------------------------------------------------------------
I never wanted to be married, it was not my idea in the first place.
My bride was to be one Ron Meiran, a proud girl who called herself ‘Nataku’. It was dislike at first sight. She was as unhappy with this match as I was. In her own words I was unworthy to carry on the proud line of our clan, I was just a scholar boy.
At times I believe she wondered how a clan such as ours could produce someone such as me, a scholar who appeared to have little interest in the warrior arts of our people. I confused her.
The feeling was mutual.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
I’ll sell my rod, I’ll sell my reel
I’ll sell my only spinning wheel
To buy my love a sword of steel
Is go dté tú mo mhuirnín slán
---------------------------------------------------------------------
They wanted me to fight.
It was the source of countless arguments between Meiran and myself, not that we did not argue about everything anyway.
At the time I did not believe the piece of junk they were building would win the war they were expecting it to fight.
I named it Shenlong.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Siúil, siúil, siúil a rúin
Siúil go sochair agus siúil go ciúin
Siúil go doras agus éalaigh liom
Is go dté tú mo mhuirnín slán
---------------------------------------------------------------------
We fought physically only once. For justice, something she strongly believed in. I won that fight, or so I believed. It took Laoshi O, and a long time afterwards, to realize that I had only won half the fight. I did not wish to believe that at the time though.
What is it they say? Hindsight is twenty-twenty?
---------------------------------------------------------------------
I’ll die my petticoats, I’ll die them red
And around the world I’ll beg my bread
Until my parents should wish me dead
Is go dté tú mo mhuirnín slán
---------------------------------------------------------------------
We never really received a chance to see if we could grow to love each other. Meiran died in an OZ attack upon our colony.
Died defending the field of flowers we fought in.
She denounced her womanhood, denounced her name, became Nataku.
Flew a monster that ripped her apart from the inside.
Died protecting me in Shenlong, throwing herself in the way of a shot meant for me. Had it only been that she might have survived but the damage had already been done by her suit. Whatever chance she had of survival was nullified.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
I wish, I wish, I wish in vain
I wish I had my heart again
And vainly think I’d not complain
Is go dté tú mo mhuirnín slán
---------------------------------------------------------------------
She was able to appreciate the simple beauty of a field of flowers too late. She died in my arms upon the very field she had fought to protect.
I could have returned to my studies. No one would have blamed or even stopped me, in fact I was encouraged to. I could have retreated, hidden from the world, forgotten everything about Shenlong and what my wife believed in.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
And now my love has gone to France
To try his fortune to advance
If he e’er returns 'tis but a chance
Is go dté tú mo mhuirnín slán
---------------------------------------------------------------------
I did not retreat, but oh how I wanted to. I took up her fight, adopted her beliefs.
I took Shenlong and renamed it. Nataku had died protecting it, protecting me, and as a result her spirit now resided within it. It was Nataku.
I would fight the war she had wanted me to fight. Her ghost would become the mask I would wear, the shadow I hid behind.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Siúil, siúil, siúil a rúin
Siúil go sochair agus siúil go ciúin
Siúil go doras agus éalaigh liom
Is go dté tú mo mhuirnín slán

I expected to die in that war. I nearly did many times. What I did not expect was to fall in love, much less with who I did.
He was so vibrant, so alive, so different from the kind of person I expected I would love, if I ever did.
It was not love at first sight, or even second for that matter - though there was some grudging respect on both sides for some time. Love grew slowly. Piece by piece he chipped away at my outer shell, worming his way persistently into my life and my heart. It is something Duo Maxwell excels at.
Farewell, Meiran, Nataku, I have hidden behind your ghost for far too long. It is time to find out what Chang Wufei believes in.
May you rest in peace, my wife.
