Wanna know what I'm gonna be studying? Some of these courses have got me salivating and going DO.WANT!!!



Part A: (You can choose 18# from this section. Each subject is worth 2....basically 'cause I'm doing the 24# course I get to do all of Part A. Sweet.)

TESOL Curriculum & Pedagogy: Classroom Strategies: This course provides tools & critical perspectives for the analysis, development & use of curriculum materials in second language classrooms. It provides students with an overview of dominant & emergent approaches to the teaching of TESOL, hands-on review of instructional materials, & classroom instructional techniques & strategies.

Translation: looking at stuff they use in the classroom, how it gets used, how to create it, that sort of thing. (Make your own course materials 101 basically). Popular things in the ESL classroom at the moment (What's hot and what's not in the teaching world) and you get to play with it all (*SQUEEEEEE* I get to love me some textbooks). And what not to do teaching wise in the classroom.

I think that covers it.

Critical Perspectives on TESOL in Educational Contexts: This course takes a critical perspective on current trends & issues in TESOL education internationally, with a specific focus on the problems & challenges of teaching TESOL in educational contexts.

Translation: What's hot and what's not in the current world of ESL. Things you're going to have problems with and how to deal with it.


Introduction to Linguistics: Syntax, Morphology & Semantics: Introduction to principles of structural linguistics focusing on syntactic structure & meaning.

Translation: Syntax=how sentences get structured. Morphology=studying the patterns in how words form. Semantics=You know that part in The Princess Bride where Vincini keeps going "INCONCEIVABLE!!!" and Inigo tells him "I do not think it means what you think it means", yeah, well Semantics is the study of the meaning of words.

This subject is going to do my head in. I can see it already.

Introduction to Linguistics: Phonetics and Phonology: Introduction to principles of structural linguistics focusing on sound patterns in language.

Translation: Phonetics=studying how the sounds that people make when they speak are made, not the actual words. Phonology= still studying the sounds but the patterns in them and how they pop up in language...or something like that. I get confused between those two.

Basically, to sum up, this is studying the sounds people make, the how and the why. Methinks that bloody phonetical alphabet thingy will be coming out at some point. I hate that thing.

Second Language Acquisition: This course provides an overview of second language development & use in formal & naturalistic settings. Key linguistic, cognitive & social factors that contribute to second learning are identified & applied in analysing learner data.

Translation: How people actually learn a second language. Probably going to include different language learning styles.

Research Methods: This course is an introduction to research methodology in language learning and teaching. It covers the skills needed to plan and carry out various types of postgraduate research, ranging from course papers to the dissertation.

Translation: How to reasearch for assignments 101. Probably going to be boring as hell so I'm getting it out of the way in the first semester there. That and it's been about 5 years since I've had to write a uni assignment. I need a refresher.

Second Language Teaching: Current approaches to TESOL & second language teaching in context of current understanding of second language acquisition.

Translation: How to teach people a second language and the popular ways to do it at the moment.

Language Testing & Assessment: Introduces principles of language testing & assessment. Goals & rationale for different types of testing are surveyed & experience provided in developing & critiquing classroom test materials.

Translation: Tests, tests and more tests. How they're written, how to use them, how to write 'em and why we use 'em.

Principles of Computer-Assisted Language Learning: Development of Computer-Assisted Language Learning. Basic computer skills, multimedia, dialogue generators, word processing, concordancing, authoring systems, software evaluation & integration of CALL into the curriculum.

Translation: How to write/use/identify/decide-if-it's-crap-or-not computer programs used for language learning for dummies.


PART B: (You can choose 6# from this. Each subject is worth 2#...so I can choose 3. It's gonna be tough!)

Applied Linguistics & Language Studies: Introduction to applied linguistic concepts & to basic literature, with special emphasis on applications of linguistic theory to problems of first & second language acquisition & to language in social contexts.

Translation: Using phonology, phonetics, semantics, morphology, and syntax and how to use those to identify problems second language learners have. (Identify their problems and fix 'em 101)

I don't think I'll be doing this one somehow.

Classroom Second Language Acquisition: Theory, Research & Practice: To understand the processes of second language learning in classroom; understand wide issues surrounding classroom second language learning & research; develop the ability to think critically about finding in the second language classroom research; understand the relationship between SLA research & second language instruction; design a classroom-based research.

Translation: Research subject. You get to write a whopping big essay on how people learn a second language.

Second Language Reading and Lexis: This course is an introduction to the development of second language reading skills with a particular focus on the role of vocabulary in skilled reading. Basic reading processes will be presented and compared across alphabet and character-based languages. Implications for teaching reading will be discussed for traditional and computer-mediated learning contexts.

Translation: Teach 'em how to read. You also get to look at how people learn to read in different languages (i.e. comparing, say, Chinese to French).

Might actually be interesting!

Networking & Multimedia: This is an in-depth course in using computers for language teaching and networking with special reference to network communication and multimedia. It includes web site design using multimedia and Internet applications, based in language teaching pedagogy. The course aims to provide students with a critical understanding & practical ability of electronic networking & multimedia, related especially to the use of computer-assisted language learning within the context of educational systems, but also more widely in the application of Information Technology to language issues.

Translation: How to write a website and run a computer system in relation to language learning, or something like that.

Intercultural Communication: Aspects of language & language-related phenomena across cultures; communication & mis-communication, politeness, verbal and non verbal communication.

Translation: How not to piss people off, basically. And how mis-communications happen.

Or you've got the choice of doing a dissertation for Part B.

I'll be doing all the subjects in Part A and I'm still working out the ones for Part B as I'm going to wait and see if I actually like the CALL subject in Part A before signing myself away to something I suck at. Done that before. Bad idea! The Intercultural Communication sound really, really intersting though.

I'm all packed now and we'll be heading down to Townsville (as that's where we're flying out of) at 4am tomorrow...Evil, EVIL time!!!!
